A comprehensive online survey involving approximately 3,000 participants from Germany, China, and the U.S. sheds light on this issue, marking the first large-scale international study on this aspect of media literacy.

Dr. Lea Schönherr and Professor Thorsten Holz of CISPA presented these findings at the 45th IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy in San Francisco. The study, carried out in collaboration with Ruhr University Bochum, Leibniz University Hanover, and TU Berlin, has been published on the arXiv preprint server.

The exponential growth of artificial intelligence has facilitated the rapid production of images, text, and audio with remarkable realism. Professor Holz warns of the risks associated with this development, particularly in influencing political opinions during crucial events such as upcoming elections. He underscores the potential threat posed to democracy by the manipulation of AI-generated content.

Given the urgency of the situation, Dr. Schönherr emphasizes the necessity of automating the identification of AI-generated media, which presents a significant research challenge. However, she notes the escalating difficulty in distinguishing such content using automated methods due to evolving AI generation techniques, highlighting the crucial role of human discernment.

This concern prompted an investigation into human capability in identifying AI-generated media. The results of the cross-media study across different countries and media formats are startling: the majority of participants struggle to differentiate between AI-generated and human-created content.

Interestingly, the study found minimal variations in recognition abilities across demographics such as age, education, political stance, or media literacy. Conducted between June and September 2022, the survey collected socio-biographical data alongside assessments of AI-generated media knowledge and various cognitive factors.

While the study’s results offer insights into cybersecurity risks, including the potential for AI-generated content in social engineering attacks, they also highlight the need for further research. Dr. Schönherr advocates for understanding the mechanisms underlying human recognition of AI-generated media and developing technical support systems such as automated fact-checking processes.

In summary, the study underscores the pressing need to address the challenges posed by AI-generated media and emphasizes the pivotal role of both human judgment and technological solutions in mitigating associated risks.
