OpenAI’s Sora has just met its match. While Veo is still in its preview phase, here’s how you can try this new model yourself.

In 2023, AI image generators captured everyone’s attention, but now companies are shifting their focus to the next big thing—AI video generation. OpenAI launched its AI text-to-video generator, Sora, in February 2024, and Google has quickly followed suit.

At the annual Google I/O developer conference on Tuesday, Google introduced Veo, its most advanced text-to-video generator. Veo can produce videos with 1080p resolution that are over one minute long.

Beyond its high-quality output, Google claims that Veo offers users an “unprecedented level of creative control.” Thanks to its deeper understanding of natural language, Veo can handle longer prompts and comprehend cinematic terms like “timelapse” or “aerial shots.” Moreover, Veo addresses a common challenge in video generation: the fluidity of shots. Google asserts that Veo can create consistent footage, with various subjects such as people, animals, and objects moving realistically.

Google is not new to video generation. The company mentioned that Veo builds on its previous projects, including Imagen-Video, VideoPoet, and Lumiere.
