What’s Next: Microsoft Build Advances AI Tools for Developers
Groundbreaking advances in AI are profoundly impacting both Microsoft and the developers leveraging our technology to boost efficiency, enhance customer experiences, and achieve new breakthroughs.
Over the past year, we’ve introduced Microsoft Copilot and rolled out more than 150 updates to it. We’ve also developed the Copilot stack, which consolidates our learnings and enables developers to create their own copilots.
In the past two years, GitHub Copilot has emerged as the most widely adopted AI developer tool, boasting 1.8 million paid subscribers.
Just recently, we launched a new category of Copilot+ PCs, the fastest and most AI-ready PCs ever built.
As industry leaders in AI, we kick off our flagship event for developers, Microsoft Build, with a burning question: What’s next?
On Monday, we unveiled a new class of Windows PCs, Copilot+ PCs. These devices are designed to enable developers to deliver unique AI experiences on the edge, and combined with the exciting features announced at Build, they position Windows as the most open platform for AI and the ideal environment for developers.
At Build, we’re also introducing new dimensions of this technology revolution, including:
- Microsoft Fabric: Helping developers and customers leverage data in motion to build intelligent apps.
- Frontier Models: Enabling developers to explore multimodal capabilities supporting text, images, video, and other data types in AI applications.
- Industry Partnerships: Demonstrating AI’s impact across various sectors, including education.
- Cloud-Based Platforms: Promoting an open and flexible cloud platform built on a foundation of safe and responsible AI to foster innovation.
Microsoft Build is an exciting time for us. Approximately 200,000 people have registered to join us for three days of technical learning and community connection, with 4,000 attending in person in Seattle. Attendees can choose from more than 300 sessions, demos, and expert-led labs from Microsoft and our partners. For those unable to attend live, most content will be available on demand. We’re unveiling about 60 new products and solutions at the event.
Innovations Announced at Build
Real-Time Intelligence for Decision Making
Businesses need to qualify, analyze, and organize data at ingestion for the most efficient AI apps. The new Real-Time Intelligence within Microsoft Fabric, now in preview, provides a comprehensive SaaS solution that empowers customers to act on high-volume, time-sensitive data for faster and more informed decisions. For example, Dener Motorsport uses Microsoft Fabric for real-time analytics, enabling them to maintain optimal performance and ensure driver safety.
Extensibility of GitHub Copilot
GitHub is introducing the first set of GitHub Copilot extensions, developed by Microsoft and third-party partners, in private preview. These additions allow developers to customize their GitHub Copilot experience with preferred services like Azure, Docker, and Sentry directly within GitHub Copilot Chat. The GitHub Copilot for Azure extension demonstrates how natural language capabilities can enhance development speed.
New Frontier Models and Multimodal Capabilities in Azure AI
OpenAI’s latest model, GPT-4o, is now available in Azure AI Studio and as an API. This multimodal model integrates text, image, and audio processing, setting a new standard for generative AI experiences. Additionally, Phi-3-vision, a new multimodal model in the Phi-3 family of AI small language models (SLMs) developed by Microsoft, is now available in Azure, offering image and text input with text responses.
AI Empowerment in Education with Khan Academy
Microsoft and Khan Academy are partnering to transform AI potential into reality. Microsoft is enabling Khan Academy to offer all K-12 U.S. educators free access to Khanmigo for Teachers, an AI-powered teaching assistant. This initiative, powered by Azure OpenAI Service, aims to free up teachers’ time for student engagement. Additionally, they plan to enhance math tutoring with a new version of Phi-3 and integrate more Khan Academy content into Copilot and Teams for Education.
Cognition AI Partnership
Microsoft and Cognition AI are collaborating to bring Cognition’s autonomous AI software agent, Devin, to customers for complex tasks such as code migration and modernization projects. Devin will be powered by Azure, highlighting Cognition AI’s commitment to aiding developers with advanced AI tools.
Advancements in AI Infrastructure
Microsoft’s systems approach to AI infrastructure includes hardware and software optimized for AI workloads. We are the first cloud provider to offer AMD’s MI300X AI accelerator chip, powering demanding AI and HPC workloads. Following the launch of Azure Cobalt 100, we’re previewing new Cobalt 100 Arm-based virtual machines, which offer up to 40% improved performance for general-purpose and cloud-native workloads.
Evolution of Copilot
Copilot has been a game-changer, assisting with complex tasks across Microsoft products. We’re now introducing Team Copilot, expanding from a personal AI assistant to a collaborative team member in applications like Teams, Loop, and Planner. Team Copilot can facilitate meetings, collaborate in chats, and manage projects. Initial experiences, coming in preview later this year, will allow us to iterate and refine as Copilot takes on more proactive roles.
Microsoft Copilot Studio
We’re launching new agent capabilities in Microsoft Copilot Studio, empowering developers to build copilots that proactively respond to data and events. These copilots can manage complex, long-running business processes, reason over actions and inputs, learn from user feedback, and request help when needed. Users can now deploy Copilot for tasks ranging from IT device procurement to customer concierge services.
